What to Expect from the New Series

Like many people, Harry Potter has had a special place in my heart since childhood. (Let's just pretend we don't know who wrote the books). I grew up with the books and movies and love the comforting and magical feeling they provide. There's also something that feels very seasonally-appropriate about Harry Potter during the fall and winter months. Although it isn't explicitly a holiday story, there's something about the cozy and fantastical elements that make it perfect for this time of year.

Soon, we're going to have even more HP content to binge, as an HBO series is in the works. Remakes are often controversial, as fans wonder how the new version will compare to their beloved original. I'm personally feeling pretty in the middle on this one. I do think HBO creates exceptional content, so if anyone is going to take on this project, I’m glad it’s them.

The series will also provide greater opportunities to explore the intricate details of the books—something that movies often struggle to achieve. With each book receiving its own dedicated season, the story will have the time and space it needs to truly shine. Of course, I will still have an attachment to the original movies and cast, but I'm curious to see how this new adaptation will bring the story to life in a different way.

Stay tuned, Harry Potter fans! It's time to get into all the details we know about the new HBO series so far.

Who Will Star In It?

So, who will be the new faces of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and friends (and enemies)? Casting decisions have yet to be finalized but are expected to be made soon. An open casting call for the main three took place back in April, which called for UK and Ireland residents between nine and 11 years old by April 2025. The showrunner revealed during a Max showcase this month that she and the team were reviewing 32,000 audition tapes. The call emphasized their commitment to “inclusive, diverse casting,” suggesting we can expect greater representation this time around! After casting for the main trio is complete, they will then focus on the remainder of the cast. There's a good chance that they will use the same tapes to find some of these roles as well. Among those being considered for other pivotal parts, Paapa Essiedu is being eyed to play Severus Snape, while Warner Bros. wants Mark Rylance for Albus Dumbledore. However, no official announcements have been made yet.

Who Is Involved?

As mentioned, HBO is behind the new series. Francesca Gardiner was appointed showrunner in June, after an intense four-month selection process that included input from J.K. Rowling, who will also be an executive producer. Gardiner's credits include Killing Eve, Succession, and His Dark Materials. The series will be directed by Mark Mylod, known for his work on Succession. Lucy Bevan leads the casting efforts, while Holly Waddington brings her expertise as the costume designer. Additionally, Laura Neal will contribute her talent as a writer.

When Will the HBO Harry Potter Series Be Released?

Filming is scheduled to begin at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden this summer, with the series set to premier in 2026 or 2027 on HBO's streaming platform, MAX (still can't get over the rebrand). So, we still have a little while to wait. But before we know it, time will have flown faster than Harry on his Firebolt.

Hope, Nostalgia, and New Perspectives

While it’s hard to imagine a reimagined Harry Potter series stepping into the massive shoes left by the original films, there’s also an undeniable excitement and curiosity in seeing how a fresh perspective can bring new life to the Wizarding World. With HBO's reputation for high-quality productions, an experienced creative team, and a commitment to staying true to the depth of the source material, there’s plenty of reason for optimism. Whether you’re nostalgic for the original magic or curious about this new take, this series promises to provide fans with an opportunity to revisit—or perhaps discover for the first time—the wonder, friendships, and unforgettable adventures of Harry Potter. I just hope they keep the iconic score from the films.
