Turn Up the Chill Factor

While skiing and snowboarding are usually top of mind when it comes to Colorado winters, there are countless other winter activities to enjoy, one of them being ice climbing. Climbing isn't reserved for the warm weather, ya know! Our state has a variety of amazing options for ice climbing adventures waiting to be embarked on. Are you ready to try something new this season? It's time take a look at the world of ice climbing and how you can enjoy this awesome sport this winter.

What is Ice Climbing?

Ice climbing is pretty self-explanatory, as you're literally climbing up ice. Similar to rock climbing, ice climbing involves using specialized equipment and techniques to ascend a frozen waterfall or other icy terrain.

Where to Go Ice Climbing in Colorado

The Ouray Ice Park

Ouray is considered the ice climbing capital of Colorado and is home to the world's first official ice park. The Ouray Ice Park is a human-made nonprofit park that offers tons of climbing options for a variety of experience levels. While the park itself does not have guide services or gear rentals, there are plenty of companies in the area permitted to operate in the park, which you can find here. Each year, they host Ice Fest, a vibrant fundraising event dedicated to celebrating the world of ice climbing. The festival features a Vendor Village, clinics, presentations, a dance party, and much more.

Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls, nestled in the picturesque town of Telluride, holds the title of Colorado's tallest free-falling waterfall. Just be sure to check the current access, as the route is not always open.

Hidden Falls

A bit closer to Denver, in Rocky Mountain National Park, lies Hidden Falls. Despite the name, it's a popular and easily accessible climb.

Clear Creek Canyon

Clear Creek Canyon, located just a short drive from Denver, offers a range of climbing routes tailored to all skill levels. This is also a very popular spot to visit.

The South Platte Ice Wall

The South Platte Ice Wall is Front Range Climbing Company's private ice park in Eleven Mile Canyon. Join them for Friday Night Ice, which is recommended for climbers with experience.

Preparing to Ice Climb

To start, strength and conditioning exercises are key—you’ll need stamina, balance, and strong grip strength to tackle those icy walls. If you're new to ice climbing, you should definitely partake in an ice climbing course guided trip. Safety is critical. Be cautious and don't jump into anything without the proper knowledge, experience, and tools.

Add Ice Climbing To Your Winter Bucket List

If you're craving a unique, adrenaline-filled adventure this winter, ice climbing is definitely worth a try. Whether you're scaling waterfalls in Telluride or tackling icy routes closer to Denver, there's a climb for everyone, no matter your skill level. Who knows? This could be your new favorite winter activity. Go ahead—embrace the cold and conquer the ice!
