Thailand

[gallery size="large" ids="5700,5702,5703,5704"] Thailand is one of the worst-kept secrets among budget travelers. This cheap destination is overflowing with amazing culture, beach huts, cuisine to die for, and amazing adventures you just won’t find anywhere else. It’s easy to get away from the crowds in Thailand, and the prices are staggeringly low.

Egypt

[gallery size="large" ids="5705,5706,5707,5708"] Good news for anyone who’s ever dreamed of seeing the pyramids! You’d think based simply on the sheer number of historical sights available in Egypt that it would be expensive to visit. Sure, the sights can start to eat into your budget if you visit every single one, but they’re balanced out by more-than-affordable food and accommodations in this cheap destination.

South Africa

[gallery size="large" ids="5709,5710,5712,5711"] Being a South African myself, I can attest to the fact that this cheap destination is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. There is so much to see and do in this amazing place. You can go on a beautiful safari and see the Big 5 without breaking the bank. There’s more here than just the Kruger Park, so make sure to do your research and explore some areas a little more off the beaten path! Oh, and got the Drakensberg. Just trust me.

Uruguay

[gallery size="large" ids="5713,5714,5715,5716"] If you’re looking to see some of South America that’s a little more off the beaten path, then skip Brazil and Argentina and head straight for Uruguay. The steak is still to die for, and there’s an abundance of beaches for you to check out. You can also visit the beautiful old capital, Montevideo.

Gambia

[gallery size="large" ids="5717,5718,5719,5720"] The smallest country in Africa is already known for its amazing beaches, but it’s so worth it to travel inland as well. Check out the chimp rehabilitation centre in the River Gambia National Park. If birds are more your speed, the Baobolong Wetland Reserve is one of the best spots for ornithology on the continent. There’s a lot to see for a really small price tag, so don’t limit yourself to the beaches! (Still check them out though - they’re gorgeous).

Greece

[gallery size="large" ids="5721,5722,5723,5724"] The current economic crisis means that this country needs all the support it can get, and most of that comes from people visiting and supporting the locals. The fact that this is such a cheap destination right now also means you’ll be able to see a lot more of it, so go explore while it’s still affordable.

Portugal

[gallery size="large" ids="5725,5726,5727,5728"] Portugal is one of the best deals in Western Europe, and is a lot less crowded than Spain. If you’re looking for a beach break, head to Alentejo, where you’ll find the best cheap seafood. Lisbon is an incredibly vibrant city with loads to do, so you’ll never be bored in this cheap destination.

Mexico

Laos

Make sure you head north to Nong Khiaw, where you can get a waterside bungalow for basically pocket change. Even in a region known for being cheap, Laos stands out.
