The gun debate in the United States has been ongoing for decades, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

In Colorado, the discussion recently heated up when Governor Jared Polis signed four bills into law to update the state’s existing gun regulations. These new laws are impacting how firearms can be purchased and used in Colorado—but what exactly do they mean? These new changes include age restrictions for purchasing guns, waiting periods for background checks, expanded red flag laws, and removal of liability protections for manufacturers.

To start, all gun purchases must be made by those 21 and older. In addition, a three-day waiting period has been implemented after the initial purchase. Red flag laws have also been expanded to include medical care providers, educators, district attorneys, and mental health care providers. This allows them to alert authorities if they know or suspect an individual may be at risk of harm to themselves or others to petition the court to temporarily remove the individual's access to firearms.

Beyond the four bills signed by Gov. Polis, a fifth bill is supported by the Democrats that would prohibit "ghost guns"—firearms without serial numbers—in the state of Colorado. Supporters believe these bills will help reduce mass shootings as well as other forms of gun violence such as domestic violence and suicides.

There is much debate around this news. House Minority Leader and Republican Mike Lynch sees the new regulations as a punishment for law-abiding gun owners. Meanwhile, Senator and Democrat Jessie Danielson believes we need to finally take action by way of tighter laws in order to create a safer environment for all Coloradans.

The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners have already filed lawsuits, specifically in response to the three-day waiting period and new age restriction. Taylor Rhodes, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, has expressed concern for the safety of women and domestic violence victims who may be unable to defend themselves under the new restrictions.

These updated gun regulations are sure to have a big impact on how firearms are used in Colorado. Ultimately, the debate around gun laws and rights will likely continue for some time. It’s important for the citizens of Colorado to stay informed about current and future gun legislation and their individual rights so that they can make informed decisions on what stance to take in this controversial issue. By understanding these changes to Colorado's gun regulations, you can arm yourself with knowledge about your rights as a firearm owner within our great state!
