Tom Flacco, future NFL quarterback?

When the Flacco family first entered the NFL in 2008, nobody was particularly surprised. Joe Flacco, along with star running back Omar Cuff, had led the University of Delaware’s Fightin’ Blue Hens to an 8-3 record and a berth in the FCS Championship game. Flacco put up great numbers (4,263 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions) on his way to being drafted 18th overall in 2008 by the Ravens. 

But as another Flacco works to enter the NFL this upcoming season, the path will not be as clear.

Tom Flacco, Joe’s younger brother, has spent the past two seasons as the starting quarterback for the Towson Tigers, another FCS school. But despite his professional pedigree, the younger Flacco will almost definitely not be chosen in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft, if he is drafted at all. Tom Flacco has compiled a 13-9 record during his two seasons as a starter, and this past season he completed 60.4 percent of his passes for 2,831 yards, with 22 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. If Tom wants to join the ranks of his brother, Tony Romo, and Carson Wentz as one of the more successful FCS quarterbacks in the NFL, he will have to work hard.  

But Tom Flacco is ready for the challenge—and to work hard. 

“No one has told me directly where I will go or if I will go in the draft,” Flacco said, according to the Baltimore Sun. “Whatever, this all just adds to the chip on my shoulder. I am not surprised. I came from a smaller school and have been overlooked. It is what it is. It does not affect how I prepare. Actually, it just makes me work harder.” 

This mindset is going to be necessary to make Flacco’s NFL dream come to fruition, as he wasn’t invited to the annual NFL Scouting Combine and will most likely join a team as an undrafted free agent.
