The chain's remaining locations are open for business.
Due to the global pandemic, Ocean City's restaurant scene just got a little smaller: Abbey Burger Bistro has permanently closed to the public. The pub chain celebrated for its build-your-own burgers and draft beers cited the burdens brought on by COVID-19 in closing up shop on the Boardwalk. They broke the news via Facebook on February 10.
"We want to thank all of our wonderful guests and employees for supporting us over these past eight summers," the post said. "We are extremely humbled that so many embraced our restaurant and that we were able to succeed as long as we had."
Like many restaurants across the country, their decision was shaped by the pandemic's impact on the service industry. With the limitations of stay-at-home orders, particularly the unique hardships faced by resort establishments, keeping their doors open was not an option amid the economic climate. Focusing on maintaining the chain's other businesses also took priority.
The Baltimore-area chain, named "Maryland's Best Burger" by USA Today, isn't your ordinary sports bar. They make burgers using a variety of meats, but we don't mean just turkey or veggie—options include duck, antelope, and even kangaroo. They operate three other locations in the Federal Hill, Fells Point, and Mt. Washington neighborhoods, as well as Camden Yards' favorite Sliders and Sullivan's Cove in Severna. These spots remain open for business and currently offer dine-in, takeout, and delivery services. In January, the chain received aid from the Barstool Fund, an organization that assists struggling businesses in the food industry.
The chain revealed the restaurant Bourbon Street would be taking their place on Coastal Highway, and they "wish them all the best." As a mainstay for eight summers in Ocean City, we're sad to see them go. On a lighter note, their website shows a new location in Havre de Grace is on the way, so more customers will be able to experience the magic they bring to the table.
