Havre de Grace is a tiny Maryland town rich in history and charm.
Havre de Grace is a waterfront village located 40 miles north of Baltimore in Harford County. Situated at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay, the town was an important shipping hub in the 1800s. Havre de Grace was an integral stop on the Underground Railroad and was home to a thriving community supported by fruit orchards, oyster harvesting, and crab harvesting. Today, the town is a popular tourist destination that features cute bed and breakfasts, historical landmarks, and a variety of boating and fishing activities.
Historical Landmarks
One of the most prominent landmarks in Havre de Grace is the Concord Point Lighthouse. Built in 1827, the lighthouse is still operational and has become a popular spot for weddings. The nearby Lock House Museum details the history of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal and its role in moving cargo through the area. The museum is housed in the lock tender’s house built in 1840. Visitors can view the original lock, the towpath, and the still-operational swing bridge.

Havre de Grace is home to several marinas and a bevy of watercraft activities. Hop aboard a fishing boat charter, take a ride on the Black-Eyed Susan paddlewheel riverboat, or explore Havre de Grave from the air on a parasail boat ride. Visit the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum and learn about the subtle art of making duck decoys, or play a round of golf at Bulle Rock, an 18-hole course designed by Pete Dye.

Havre de Grace is home to a number of historic bed and breakfasts. The La Cle D'or Guesthouse is the former home of the John Hopkins Family. Built in 1868, it features antique furnishings, private baths, central air, and plenty of places to relax with a book.
