The brewery's located inside a remodeled freight rail.

If you fancy a refreshing beer this weekend, a hoppin' watering hole is now open in northeastern DC. City-State Brewing, the District's newest taproom, opened its doors on Friday, June 4, after being pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Situated between the Edgewood and Brookland neighborhoods, the brewery resides in a refurbished freight rail depot consisting of two brewhouses and a taproom.

Beer will be flowing during the inaugural weekend, which will feature six brews on tap: the Equal Marriage dark wheat, 8 Wards Independent Pale Ale, Feather Duster hazy ale, Trainspotter ale, Blossom Kolsch, and Redbud hibiscus Kolsch.

The brewery came to fruition after years of fundraising by founder James Warner. A former congressional staffer and New Yorker, he fell in love with DC and wanted his business to pay tribute to the city's unique culture. Visitors will find references to go-go music and DC independence in their beer cans and posters by local artist Anthony Dihle.

“We’re opening in a historically diverse neighborhood. We’re in Edgewood, and I live in Brookland next door,” Warner told WTOP on Thursday. “I want to make sure that, as we build our business, we’re also building our community.” Warner previously told the Washington City Paper the brewery will offer employment opportunities to people previously affected by incarceration, a goal confirming the brewery's communal focus.

Additional amenities include board games and rental services for private events. Visitors can also look forward to new beer offerings and a garden patio within the next few weeks.

To celebrate their opening, the brewery is extending its hours this weekend: Friday 3 p.m. to 1 a.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. You can find out more on their website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Bottoms up!
