EGYPT’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) has awarded a contract to a consortium of Arab Contractors and Hassan Allam Construction to rebuild part of Alexandria's tram network which dates from 1863. The value of the contract has not been disclosed. Egypt’s minister of transport Kamel El-Wazir says the project will involve rebuilding a 13.2km section with 24 stations. Of this, 5.7km will be on the surface, 7.3km elevated, and 276m underground. The line runs west from Victoria via San Stefano and Sidi Gaber to Raml. The line will interchange with the city’s first metro line, which is currently under construction, at Victoria and Sidi Gaber. Reconstruction will reduce the journey time on the route from 60 to 35 minutes by increasing the operating speed from 11 to 21km/h while headways will be cut from nine to three minutes. Passenger capacity will be increased from 4700 to 13,800 passengers per hour per direction. Egypt signed a contract with Hyundai Rotem in June 2024 to supply 30 new LRVs for the project.
