A new dog has wriggled its way onto the American Kennel Club’s list of Top Ten Dog Breeds.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has announced its annual list of Top Ten Most Popular Dog Breeds. The Labrador retriever holds steady at number one for the 29th consecutive year. Americans do love their labs, so that comes as no surprise. What is surprising is that there’s a new breed on the list.

Along with popular contenders like the poodle, beagle, and German shepherd, the Pembroke Welsh corgi has pawed its way into the top 10 list for the first time ever. It shouldn’t really be a surprise, though, as the friendly-faced, stubby-legged, and plushy-tushed corgi is all over the social scene (Instagram in particular) and hangs out with royals, both real and in name. Queen Elizabeth II currently has four corgis and has owned more than 30 during her reign. Author Stephen King has a corgi named Molly.

According to CNN, Brandi Hunter, AKC vice president of public relations and communications, said,

"I think they got a lot of exposure from pop culture, especially on social media. There's a lot of accounts that are dedicated to corgis. You get to see them in 'The Crown,' but they're also really great dogs. They are a lot of dog in a little package. They're very adaptable, very smart and people tend to really fall in love with them.”
