A 24-year-old man arrested in India, accused of visiting a forbidden island, was a University of Arizona graduate.

The university confirmed it did have a record of a student named Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov who attended the university and completed both an undergraduate and graduate degree. Polyakov was arrested in India on March 31, after visiting North Sentinel Island on March 29, Indian police officials told CNN . North Sentinel Island is part of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago and home to the uncontacted Sentinelese tribe.

Indian law prohibits people from traveling within 3 miles of the island, including for fishing. According to Survival International , the Sentinelese wish to remain isolated from the outside world, and any contact could also wipe out the community if they were introduced to diseases.

What did Polyakov do on North Sentinel Island?

Officials said Polyakov landed on the island and attempted to make contact by blowing a whistle, according to BBC . He filmed his five-minute-long visit with a GoPro camera and left a Diet Coke and a coconut onshore as offerings while also collecting some sand. A local fisherman saw Polyakov on his return trip to a nearby island.

Polyakov has a YouTube channel dedicated to travel to uncommon places, including a video series called “Taliban-Controlled Afghanistan Through American Eyes,” which documented him spending three weeks in Afghanistan. Videos include him visiting historical places, meeting locals, holding weapons and ammunition, shooting with an Afghan militia and joining people in celebrations.

His videos from Afghanistan were posted in September and October.

In December, Polyakov got a speeding ticket from a Scottsdale photo enforcement camera, according to Scottsdale court records. He was ordered to pay $311 for the ticket, but has not, according to the records. He has twice failed to appear in court over the ticket, but one court date, April 1, was after he was already arrested in India.
