NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) - Services have resumed after a transformer fire in the Bronx impacted Amtrak trains that run between Union Station in New Haven and New York City.

Service are resumed between Washington and New York from an earlier overhead power issue.

In addition, service resumed between New York and Boston from a previous brush fire.

Residual delays are expected due to late equipment and heavy rail congestion.

Service was initially suspended around 3:05 p.m. on Tuesday after the transformer exploded and caused the fire along the Amtrak tracks in the Bronx.

Due to the fire, Amtrak said power was shut down power in the area.

Around 4:15 p.m., service was suspended between New Haven and New York City .

Fire officials said they were investigating the explosion’s cause. No injuries were reported.

Due to the incident, the rail service said travelers can expect Amtrak service delays between Boston, New Haven, and New York-Washington on Wednesday.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said Metro-North Railroad services would honor Amtrak tickets for customers who have to travel between New York and New Haven.

“I would have just taken the Amtrak from Penn Station into Providence,” said New Haven resident Nathan Sabo. “Now I went to Penn Station, Grand Station, Metro North and hopefully Amtrak home.”

Travelers who wished to use Metro-North as an alternative means of transportation must board the train at New York’s Grand Central Station.

It noted that transportation would not be available between Penn Station and Grand Central.

Amtrak said it will waive additional charges for customers who change their reservation during the modified schedule. Those customers can call the Amtrak reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.
