STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The neighborhood of Dongan Hills was named after Thomas Dongan, the 17th-century British governor of New York. One of its main thoroughfares is the five-mile-long Richmond Road, which has seen its share of iconic businesses over the decades. Among the most memorable were at its intersection with Stobe Avenue: the vintage Victory Diner , which moved there from Castleton Corners in the 1960s, and a neighboring open-air vegetable and fruit stand. The charming market was reminiscent of spring, as the abundance of vegetables and fruits increased with the warming season. 1789 Richmond Road at Stobe Avenue in Dongan Hills is shown in this 1980s Tax Department photo. Tax Dept. Today, the diner is no longer there. It was put on a flatbed truck and moved to a temporary home in Midland Beach in 2007 before it was ultimately destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. And the space where the fruit stand once stood transformed into an indoor market/deli for a while, but is now home to Rustic Pizza & Pasteria.
