Jun. 15—A man reportedly robbed a gas station before being found less than a mile away in Northwest Albuquerque, where he was shot by Albuquerque police on a 100-plus-degree Sunday afternoon.Police did not disclose the man's identity. At about 3:10 p.m., the Albuquerque Police Department received a call that a man — possibly armed with a handgun — had robbed the Circle K convenience store on Bluewater and Coors NW, APD Deputy Chief George Vega said during a news conference.About a half-hour later, police found a man matching the robber's description in the area of 60th Street and Central NW, less than a mile away, he said. Detectives tried to contact the man before two officers fired less lethal ammunition, Vega said. After the man ran, he said, "officers followed the individual and at which point, a firearm was produced and shots were fired."No officers were injured, Vega said. A detective shot him with a firearm, Vega said, but it is unclear who fired first and where the man was shot. The man was arrested and then taken to University of New Mexico Hospital and is "listed in stable condition," Vega said. The man is a convicted felon with a criminal history that includes property crimes, he said."(This is) just another instance that I could point out where officers are contacting somebody that should have never been in possession of a firearm," Vega said.A Multi-Agency Task Force is canvassing the area and talking to neighbors, he said.Property has been recovered, "but we need to go through the process of (getting) warrants and everything else to just see exactly what we have right now," Vega said.
