Diamondbacks right-hander Kevin Ginkel made his first appearance in a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday. The results were not great. Taking over to start the sixth inning against Albuquerque, Ginkel gave up two runs on two hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. He struck out one. Ginkel had trouble finding the strike zone, throwing several non-competitive pitches. On the bright side, his fastball velocity was more or less in its typical range; he averaged 95.3 mph and topped out at 96.5 mph. It is unclear if Ginkel will make another appearance for Reno, though it seems like the club would prefer him to post better results before bringing him back from the injured list. Though he had faced hitters at Salt River Fields, where he pitched in extended spring training games, it was his first game in a real stadium since March 20, when he faced the Athletics in a Cactus League contest.

At Chase Field: Burnes, still seeking his first win with Arizona, is set to make his second home start and fifth overall this season. In his last start on April 18 in Chicago, Burnes got a no-decision with two earned runs allowed in six innings. He will make his fourth career start against the Rays and is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in the three previous starts, which have all been quality starts of six or more innings with three or fewer earned runs allowed. ... Rasmussen and Burnes go back to when they were Milwaukee Brewers teammates, and once combined to throw a shutout together with a third pitcher. Rasmussen credited Burnes with leading him to a sports psychologist, and also appreciates Burnes for all of the advice and encouragement he had for Rasmussen when they were teammates. ... Rasmussen has not allowed a home run in 62 innings dating back to May of 2023, which is the longest active streak in the major leagues. "A little bit of luck, I think that can't be understated," he said on April 23.
