ROOSEVELT, Ariz. — Arizona
may soon get a brand new lake , and this body of water would be a literal powerhouse for the Valley. Salt River Project has gotten preliminary approval to build a small lake and add it to the existing string of power-producing Salt River Lakes, which include Roosevelt, Apache, Canyon, and Saguaro. The as-yet-unnamed lake would be put between Roosevelt and Apache Lakes. It would have a surface area of only about 300 acres but would be unusually deep at 300 feet. That depth will allow water to move at high speed over power-producing turbines. The new lake could generate as much as 2000 megawatts, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The current string of lakes only generates a combined 300 megawatts. The lake could be finished as soon as 2033.
