OTTUMWA, Iowa. (KCTV) - A multi-state investigation led to the arrest of an Arkansas man believed to have burglarized more than two dozen school districts in Iowa and Missouri.

The Wapello County, Iowa, Sheriff’s Office says that a months-long multi-state investigation draws closer to a close on Thursday, May 1, with the arrest of Curtis L. Barton, 40, of Jacksonville, Arkansas. He is believed to be behind the burglaries of 16 school districts in Iowa and Missouri.

Law enforcement officials noted that the investigation began on Feb. 2, when Wapello County’s Cardinal Community School District reported break-ins at all three of its schools. Extensive damage was caused and more than $4,000 in cash was stolen. Despite early efforts, initial leads were scarce.

Investigators indicated that several more similar burglaries were reported at schools across Missouri and southwest Iowa. Ultimately, leads led law enforcement officials to identify Barton as the suspect.

Law enforcement officials said a background investigation revealed he had been on parole for a previous conviction of burglarizing schools and small businesses in Missouri in 2018. A search warrant was executed at both of his known residences in Arkansas.

The Sheriff’s Office said Barton was taken into custody as evidence that directly linked him to the burglaries was found. As of Thursday, he remains behind bars in Little Rock, Arkansas, on a $100,000 bond pending extradition.

Currently, investigators noted that Barton is believed to have burglarized 14 school districts in Missouri and 2 in Iowa. Additional burglaries of small businesses are being reviewed in connection with the case.

Law enforcement officials indicated that the investigation remains active as additional charges are expected. Anyone with information about Barton’s alleged crimes should report it to the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office at 641-684-4350.
