Aspen Skiing Co., owner of Aspen Basalt Campground, has officially joined the tiny housing community.

It began when Skico hired Philip Jeffreys to tackle affordable housing for their employees. When Jeffreys joined Skico in July, the company was short an estimated 600 beds. In an effort to meet the need quickly, Skico has decided to experiment with 6 tiny homes this winter. Each home has about 500 square feet - and every inch is utilized. Similar to an RV, these tiny homes are built on a trailer and equipped with Mitsubishi heating and cooling systems. The highly efficient homes come with flat screen TVs, full bathrooms, a furnished living room and a compact kitchen. The custom-made trailers took eight weeks to build and cost about $100,000 each. Three of the six models are designed for roommates, with lofts on opposite sides of the coach and custom built walls for privacy. The other three models were designed with a couple or small family in mind. The compact homes have several windows for light, and little to no traffic noise when parked by a road. Rent will cost $600 per person, per month. If their experiment works, Skico plans to expand in phases. As it plays out, current year-round tenants in the Aspen Basalt Campground are in limbo. Though tenants have been told evictions may occur in the future, Jeffreys says he would like to work toward a solution that doesn’t involve forcing current tenants out. This story originally broke on Vail Daily.

Salida will soon have the largest tiny home community in the U.S.
