LAKE CITY, Fla. (WCJB) - An investigation is underway at the Columbia County Jail after an inmate died on Thursday.

Sheriff’s office officials say at 7:22 p.m., detention deputies were doing checks of inmates in their cells when they found an inmate in medical distress.

They say deputies attempted life-saving measures until Columbia Fire Rescue crews arrived. The inmate was taken to a nearby hospital, where they died.

Officials say no foul play is suspected at this time; however, Florida Department of Law Enforcement officers are investigating the incident.
