EL CERRITO — A person died Tuesday after being hit by a BART train at the El Cerrito Plaza station, officials said.

The collision shut down the El Cerrito Plaza Station and closed service between North Berkeley and Richmond for nearly four hours.

The transit agency announced about 12:25 p.m. that it had resumed normal train service. Before that, trains went through the station on a single track in both directions through El Cerrito Plaza station after BART opened the station about 11:25 a.m.

Initially after the colliision, BART turned around Richmond-bound trains at the North Berkeley station and didn’t let trains depart from Richmond.

BART spokesperson Chris Filippi said somebody went onto the track at El Cerrito Plaza and was hit by a train. That person was declared dead at the scene, Filippi said.

No foul play was suspected.

AC Transit honored BART fares on lines No. 72 (Richmond to North Berkeley), No. 79 (El Cerrito Plaza to Berkeley) and No. 7 (El Cerrito Del Norte to Berkeley) while the station was closed.

No other information was available immediately.
