The
Arizona State football team is coming off a Big 12 Championship and College Football Playoff appearance last season. Kenny Dillingham turned the program around quickly by leading the Sun Devils to an 11-3 overall record and 7-2 Big 12 record in just his second season as the head coach in Tempe. ASU football has a lot going for it in the upcoming season, but is it the team to beat in the conference in 2025? Recent Big 12 football power rankings are conflicted. Some have the Sun Devils No. 1 in their post-spring conference power rankings, while others have them No. 2 behind either Texas Tech or
Kansas State . Here's what they are saying about the Sun Devils' chances to repeat as Big 12 champions in the latest Big 12 power rankings.
CBS Sports : Arizona State ranked No. 1 in Big 12 power rankings
Shehan Jeyarajah wrote: "The Sun Devils narrowly hold onto the top spot after returning quarterback Sam Leavitt, receiver Jordyn Tyson and safety Xavion Alford. Arizona State was frankly ahead of schedule by reaching the CFP in 2024 and brings back a number of the chief catalysts from their shocking Big 12 title team. If Kanye Udoh can help fill a portion of Cameron Skattebo's role, ASU could be back in the CFP again."
ESPN : Arizona State had second best offseason in Big 12
The site only placed the Sun Devils' offseason behind Texas Tech. It wrote: "Dillingham must be thrilled with how everything is setting up for Year 3. Arizona State brings back a ton of experience from its CFP squad, including 25 players with starts last season. You didn't hear rumors about Sam Leavitt, Jordyn Tyson or other returning starters testing the open market. The Sun Devils brought in Udoh to team with Kyson Brown and landed a trio of talented receivers in Hamilton, Moss and Noble Johnson (Clemson) to replace departing seniors. They also added help in the secondary, but for the most part, the Sun Devils were looking to boost depth. They've got more than enough to chase another Big 12 title and are eager to run it back."
The Deseret News : Arizona State ranked No. 1 in Big 12 power rankings
Brandon Judd wrote: "The Sun Devils will tremendously miss tough-minded running back Cam Skattebo — who seemed to do it all for ASU — but they have key offensive weapons returning in quarterback Sam Leavitt and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson. It’s fair to expect Leavitt to take another step forward after his first season as a starter, and Tyson is a dangerous receiver. Add in running back transfer Kanye Udoh from Army, and there appear to be several playmakers on offense. While Arizona State didn’t bring in any transfer rated four stars by 247 Sports, the Sun Devils also didn’t lose any four-star transfers. Given the Sun Devils’ retention efforts — they have 10 starters back on defense — the defending Big 12 champion remains the team to beat."
Fansided : Arizona State ranked No. 2 in Big 12 power rankings
The site had Kenny Dillingham's team behind Texas Tech in its post-spring power ranking of the conference. Joseph Smith wrote: Arizona State was nobody's pick to capture the Big 12 Championship and an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff last season until they took the gridiron in the fall and pulled it off. While there are questions as to whether they can maintain momentum from their meteoric rise, the pieces are in place. Kenny Dillingham enters his third season as coach -- right around the time when coaches really tend to start cooking at a new program, as they have their culture set in place and begin to develop their own recruits -- and he gets back signal caller Sam Leavitt, who is the presumed top quarterback in the league headed into 2024. Add in 10 returning defensive starters and Army transfer running back Kanye Udoh, who comes off a 1,000 yard season and looks to replace Cam Skattebo, and Arizona State has what it takes to run it back."
247 Sports : Arizona State ranked No. 1 in Big 12 power rankings
Cody Nagel wrote: "Arizona State remains the team to beat in the Big 12 for 2025 until someone proves otherwise. The reigning conference champion brings back the vast majority of its major contributors from 2024, when the Sun Devils stunned en route to the College Football Playoff. The loss of stud running back Cam Skattebo is significant, but 16 returning starters provide plenty of continuity and experience for another run. Quarterback Sam Leavitt proved to be a top-tier quarterback in the nation with his poised, playmaking ability last season and should carry that momentum into 2025 as the centerpiece of Arizona State."
Sports Illustrated : Arizona State ranked No. 2 in Big 12 power rankings
The site has ASU football only behind Kansas State in its latest ranking of the teams in the conference. James Parks wrote: "The loss of tailback Cam Skattebo is enough for us to knock the defending Big 12 champion Sun Devils out of the top spot, but there’s plenty of other experience at other positions, led by quarterback Sam Leavitt."
Fansided : Arizona State ranked No. 1 in Big 12 power rankings
David Howman wrote: "A year ago, the Sun Devils were picked to finish last in the Big 12, but they went on to win the conference and earn a first round bye in the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff. Considering that the last team to win this conference in consecutive seasons is now in the SEC, and that it hasn't happened five seasons, Arizona State faces some stiff odds to repeat. However, it's hard to bet against them right now. Head coach Kenny Dillingham kept his staff together and, outside of running back Cam Skattebo, returns the bulk of his team's key players from last year. Quarterback Sam Leavitt is the consensus top passer in the Big 12 entering his sophomore season, and he's got upgraded weapons with Jordyn Tyson's return from an injury and several transfers, including Jalen Moss."
Heartland College Sports : Arizona State ranked No. 2 in Big 12 power rankings
The site put Texas Tech as the No. 1 team in its post-transfer portal power rankings of the conference. Bryan Clinton wrote: "Replacing Cam Skattebo is no small feat, but if Arizona State finds a way to do it, they’ll likely be right back in Arlington for another Big 12 Championship Game in December. The Sun Devils return depth and experience at virtually every other spot on the roster, and will have one of the best quarterbacks in the country to lean on with Sam Leavitt back under center. ASU won’t be sneaking up on anyone in 2025—so that dynamic will be interesting to monitor—but as long as Kenny Dillingham keeps this thing on the tracks, his team should be a contender once again."
