The African-American Museum will soon be showcasing original items from the Black Panther set, such as Chadwick Boseman’s iconic suit.
Black Panther was a revolutionary movie, not just in the superhero genre, but for all of cinematology. This blockbuster film showed that movies showcasing black characters and stories can have mass appeal, racking up over $1.35 billion in the box office to date and recently beating Titanic to become the third biggest (unadjusted) grosser of all time. The movie features a black director, black superhero, and black cast members, showcasing the beauty and power of the imaginary African country of Wakanda.
The African-American Museum announced recently that they will be displaying several items from the Black Panther movie, including Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther suit; a shooting script signed by Ryan Coogler (director), Kevin Feige (producer, president of Marvel Studios), Nate Moore (executive producer), and Joe Robert Cole (co-writer; producer); two pages of script; and high-resolution production photos.
The objects will be shown during the museum’s film festival from October 24 to 27.
The African-American Museum says,
“Black Panther is the first superhero of African descent to appear in mainstream American comics, and the film itself is the first major cinematic production based on the character. Black Panther illustrates the progression of blacks in film, an industry that in the past has overlooked blacks, or regulated them to flat, one-dimensional and marginalized figures. The film, like the museum, provides a fuller story of black culture and identity.”
