The Metropolitan Police Department has provided an update on a case that commenced with the search for a critical missing person, 17-year-old Nyair Raymond, who was ultimately found dead in the Anacostia River this month. The search began when Raymond was reported missing by his family in January, after he was last spotted on the 1300 block of 7th Street, Northwest, according to a statement on the MPD's official website .

Investigators pieced together events that led up to Raymond's disappearance, starting with an attempt by the First District officers to stop a stolen vehicle on January 15. The car crashed while trying to escape and both, the driver and a passenger, believed to be Raymond, fled on foot. The driver was caught but the passenger eluded capture, last seen scaling a fence at the 1700 block of South Capitol Street, Southwest. Despite a concentrated search, police didn't find the passenger at that time.

A flier featuring Raymond's photo was circulated to locate him. In the days that followed, clothing believed to belong to Raymond was found along the Anacostia River bank. It wasn't until March 7 that a body was discovered in the river by the Frederick Douglass Bridge, which the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) later identified as Raymond on March 19. The MPD has stated the investigation into Raymond's death is still active as the OCME works to establish the exact cause and manner of his death.

The family of Nyair Raymond is grappling with the tragic outcome of their loved one's disappearance, and the MPD has expressed their condolences during this challenging time.
