The Eagles (11-15, 3-12) moved within 1½ games behind Syracuse, which currently holds the 15th and final seed, with five games remaining.

Donald Hand Jr. was the only player in double figures for Boston College with 16 points on 7-for-18 shooting. Chad Venning and Jayden Hastings each added 8 points.

Roger McFarlane and Joshua Beadle each had three steals.

In the first half, the Hokies (11-15, 6-9) had as many points as turnovers, shooting just 5-for-25.

Virginia Tech only needed 4:15 to score more points in the second half than in the opening 20 minutes, and were within 33-23 with 15:45 remaining.

Mylyjael Poteat led the Hokies with 10 points from off the bench.

Boston College proceeded to hold Virginia Tech without a field goal for the next 9:27 while going on a 13-1 run to stretch the lead to a game-high 22 on a McFarlane 3-pointer.

Virginia Tech finished 15-for-51 (29.4 percent) from the floor, including 3-for-19 (15.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Eagles led 26-11 at halftime, but the lead could have been even more as they were just 1-for-10 from 3-point range and 1 of 4 at the free throw line.

The Eagles host Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon.
