The concert will be available for on-demand viewing through February 6.
The Boulder Philharmonic understands it's difficult for people to currently participate in the arts. Health restrictions to slow down the spread of COVID-19 don't allow for large gatherings, which includes concert events. However, that doesn't mean you can't enjoy a wonderful concerto from the comfort of your own home.
Boulder Phil presents the "Zuill and Zwilich Digital Concert" on Saturday, January 23, at 7:30 p.m. The Grammy-winning cellist Zuill Bailey returns to Boulder for the first out of two programs with the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Zwilich's new concerto, written specifically for Zuill, plays with influences from jazz and pop music.
The premiere will be presented in a chamber-sized revision of the concerto, which will mirror the instrumentation of one of the best chamber works in the repertoire, Schubert's Trout Quintet.
Additionally, the concerto includes three performances. The program starts with "Rachmaninoff Vocalise," written for cello and piano. Zuill Bailer will play the cello and Michael Butterman will be on the piano. Next will be Zwillich's new piece, the chamber version of the "Cello Concerto with Zuill" in the cello. Lastly, the concerto concludes with "Schubert's Piano Quintet in A Major, D. 667." Trout, with Zuill in cello and Jennifer Hayghe in piano.
The cost of the ticket is $40 and can be purchased on the Boulder Phil's website. Before the beginning of the concerto, there will be a discussion held via Zoom at 7 p.m. The program will be available for on-demand viewing until February 6. This means people who couldn't see the concert live can still purchase a ticket and see it at a later day.
