The United States wants the UN Security Council on Monday to vote on a brief resolution calling for a "swift end" to the war in Ukraine that omits mention of Kyiv's territory occupied by Russia.
The text appears to rival a competing draft resolution being negotiated by Kyiv and its European Union allies for a vote by the UN General Assembly to mark the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Coming amid Trump's efforts to sideline Kyiv and the EU from talks on the future of the devastating war, the US text "implores a swift end to the conflict and further urges a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia."
The terse resolution stands in sharp contrast to the previous texts adopted by the Assembly with the support of Trump's predecessor Democrat Joe Biden.
According to several diplomatic sources who spoke to AFP on Saturday, the United States wants to submit the text on Monday to a vote by the Security Council, which has been paralyzed on the topic of the Ukraine war because of Russia's veto power.
