On Wednesday, July 26, the Broncos signed John Elway to a new five-year contract and promoted him to President of Football Operations/General Manager. Elway is entering his seventh season as the Broncos' lead football executive.

John Elway is now the Broncos' President of Football Operations/GM after signing a five-year contract with the NFL team. Formerly the Vice President, Elway will continue to have control over the Broncos' decisions. In a press release by the Broncos, Broncos President and CEO Joe Ellis said,
We're football first here at the Broncos and obviously John is our leader of the team. I think he is definitely deserving of this title elevation. It's really a recognition that he deserves for all that he does and all that he has done for this team over the years since he arrived here in [1983]."
Elway's contract will go until 2021, and although the terms of the contract have yet to be released, it's expected that he will be the league's highest-paid GM. Elway was hired by Pat Bowlen to lead the Broncos' football operations on January 5, 2011. This will be Elway's seventh season as an executive with the team. He has helped lead the Broncos to the second-most overall wins in the NFL (since 2011), with 73 wins. It also doesn't hurt that the team has had five AFC West Division titles in the last six years and won its third championship in Super Bowl 50.
