The Tampa Bay Buccaneers zigged when the NFL world thought they would zag in the first round of the NFL Draft .

Thinking the franchise would go defense, considering the needs and the fact that the offense was already loaded with talent, Tampa Bay got Baker Mayfield another weapon in Ohio State 's Emeka Egbuka.

The slot receiver, who loves all the dirty work of blocking and doing the team things, now makes his way to the NFC South champs to be part of an offense that already has Mike Evans , Chris Godwin, Cade Otton, and Jalen McMillan.

But despite the now overwhelming weapons at Mayfield's disposal, head coach Todd Bowles says that when it came time to pick, and Emeka was on the board, it was an easy choice.

"Total package," Bowles said of Egbuka. "He's a playmaker, can play all three positions, the slot, the Z, the X, can run with the ball, throw the ball, catch the ball. He's a very good route runner, he's a winner, makes contested catches, very precise route runner. A lot of speed, he blocks, he checks all the boxes as a player and as a person, and that made it an easy choice."

Feb 28, 2025; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Ohio State wideout Emeka Egbuka (WO12) speaks during a press conference during the 2025 NFL Combine at Indiana Convention Center.

Possessing good speed and high-quality ball skills, Egbuka gives new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard another lever to pull in the passing game.

A good route runner, who has a knack for getting open, but the biggest plus for Emeka is that he is a more than willing blocker in the run game, and considering the Buccaneers have Bucky Irving in the backfield, that is a big deal.

Some might see it as a luxury pick given the embarrassment of riches at Mayfield's disposal, but as we have seen with the Philadelphia Eagles , you can never have too many weapons.

And in Egbuka, the Buccaneers just got the "total package" to add to their already explosive offense.
