UFC welterweight contender Carlos Prates got some fighting advice from his mother just days before UFC Kansas City.

Carlos Prates is one of several budding stars in the UFC welterweight division. For the second consecutive fight in his young UFC career, Prates will headline a card when he takes on Ian Machado Garry this weekend in Kansas City.

Prates was supposed to return to the Octagon at UFC 314 against Geoff Neal earlier this month, but Neal withdrew due to injury. Instead of finding Prates a short-notice replacement opponent at UFC 314, Prates was promoted to the headlining spot at UFC Kansas City opposite Garry.

While Prates has made it look relatively easy thus far in his UFC career, that hasn’t stopped his mother from worrying in Brazil.

Prates is one of several prominent names out of the Fighting Nerds MMA gym in Brazil, featuring the likes of featherweight star Jean Silva and surging middleweight Caio Borralho . All three are on the verge of potential UFC title shots after dominant runs so far in the Octagon.

Ahead of the biggest fight of Prates’s life, he received some cold words of encouragement from his mother.

During a recent episode of ESPN ‘s UFC Journey series , Prates received a surprise call from his mother, and she pleaded for a quick night in the Octagon.

“Don’t give the opponent a chance to play too much. Do you understand? And finish the war quickly,” Prates’s mother said.

“The way mommy likes it, with a perfect finishing touch!”

Luckily for Prates’s mother, Prates usually finishes his opponents quickly, as evidenced by recent wins over Li Jingliang and Neil Magny . But Garry proposes a formidable test for the upstart Prates, and the two have some bad blood brewing ahead of fight night.

Garry started the pre-fight banter with Prates by labeling the Brazilian ‘not a fighter’ ahead of UFC Kansas City. It didn’t take long for Prates to hit back after accusing him of being a fake fighter.

Prates ramped things up a notch when he shared a brutally honest theory for why Garry is just now set to headline his first UFC main event fight. He also bashed Garry for failing to finish a badly compromised Magny when they fought at UFC 292.

Tensions are heating up ahead of UFC Kansas City as Garry and Prates look to potentially earn a title shot with a show-stopping finish.
