Frederick is home to numerous bars, clubs and its own local music scene, now the city has its very own annual Jazz festival.
While Washingtonians and Marylanders living near D.C. can get their Jazz fix at the annual D.C. Jazz Festival, those who live further out of town and in northern Maryland will have a new nearby summer festival option. On Saturday June 17, the first ever Frederick Jazz festival debuts.
Frederick has a solid music scene, which Jazz is very much a part of. The business and population boom the town has experienced has drawn lots of visitors from neighboring counties and Washington D.C., which should help make the new Jazz festival a success.
Carroll Creek Amphitheater will be hosting the festival, and it is known as a very picturesque place worthy of being in a fairy tale. Along Carroll Creek there is plant and wildlife, including ducks, while on the water are bridges and paddle boats. The entire area has been restored by the city of Frederick and is an ideal location to spend a day outside. The venue is situated a close distance from downtown Frederick and allows visitors the option to come and go as they please and to enjoy attractions outside of the festival as well as within the Amphitheater.
Nearby are numerous shops and restaurants in historic Downtown Frederick. Visitors who are interested in seeing a little bit of Frederick, while attending the festival, will want to check out the main corridor of Market and Patrick streets. However, if you just want a brew or bite to eat, food and drink will be available for purchase within the festival gates. Of the drink options, one will be the wines of Linganore Winecellars, while Humble BBQ will be serving up delicious food options.
The main attraction, of course, is the music. Scheduled to perform are jazz artists Chesley Green, Marcus Mitchell, Darryl Brenzel, Howard Burns and Trey Eley. Trey Eley is a contemporary jazz flutist, Chelsey Green an acclaimed violinist and Marcus Mitchell will be blowing musical minds with his saxophone playing.
Jazz is one genre that tends to sound better live than on record. Festival goers can expect lots of improvisation and originality, as well as a family friendly vibe. Festival organizers and the National Association of Music Merchants’ Music for All Foundation have partnered together and this year’s festival will help to further music education.
Interested patrons should buy tickets early; June 10 tickets are $40 while all day passes will sell for $50 thereafter. Kids 12 and under can attend for free.
Visitors can park in the metered street parking available in downtown Frederick, however, the festival recommends using the parking garages located within walking distance from the Amphitheater. Bus schedule information can be found on the City of Frederick Connector
