The University of Maryland Baltimore County’s new event center opens February 3, just in time for the men’s basketball team to take on the University of Vermont.
Until now, the University of Maryland Baltimore County hasn't had a campus facility to hold commencement ceremonies, sports games, and other college events. But all of that will change when the school’s new, $85 million, 172,000-square-foot sports and event center officially opens on February 3. The center will be used for Retrievers’ home basketball and volleyball games, in addition to graduation ceremonies, concerts, guest speakers, and banquets. Construction started back in 2016, with the goal of creating one of the best NCAA division I venues in the country. The university hopes the new venue will help recruit the best student athletes, who could help propel UMBC’s sports programs into the top three.
UMBC’s “visually striking” event venue will be home to the Department of Athletics, as well as the strength and conditioning areas, a practice gym, and multimedia spaces, among others. Standard amenities like concessions, catering, hospitality and guest services can also be found here.
