If you think you’ve found your favorite football team, think again.

The Colorado School of Mines is famously known for their academics. With the school’s main focus only offering opportunities in engineering and applied science, it is a no-brainer that this school is not for everyone. Originally founded in 1874, the School of Mines has been producing some of the most talented engineers ever since. I’m not here to tell you what you already know, but I am here to tell you that this school also holds one of the best RMAC division 2 football teams in the country.   The most fascinating part about this team is that not only are they all accredited athletes, but they are also engineers. Between school work and football, where is the balance? Being a student athlete is already challenging enough, but add in an engineering degree on top of it and you have a full plate. Colorado School of Mines is ranked one of the top 25 schools in the west according to Forbes Magazine. Impressive? I think so. The quarterback, Justin Dvorak, threw for 342 yards and for four touchdowns, three of which were by Brody Oliver (tight end). In total, the Mines offense ranked up a whopping 481 yards.   To stop the top offense in the country, you’re probably assuming that the Mines defense was unbeatable, and you’re exactly right. A key turning point in the second quarter was when senior Drake Thenell (linebacker) made an impressive stop against Azusa at the two-yardline. This didn’t happen once, but twice. Caleb Courkamp (safety) and Grant Gale (linebacker) also had game-changing stops. A battle to the end, the final score was 27-23.   The stadium in which they play, called The Marv Kay Stadium, was just completely rebuilt in 2015. The $21 million dollar project seats more than 4,000 fans and is perfectly situated right at 12th and Maple Street, right along clear creek.   Next time you’re in Golden, be sure to come and support the Colorado School of Mines football team!
