JAY, Vt. (WCAX) - We’re kicking off the first full week of fall with a check on the foliage in Vermont.

She found patches of nice color throughout the Kingdom but said it’s definitely not peak yet. This is the case along Route 2 through Danville and St. Johnsbury and the Lyndon area.

Next, she stopped at the iconic Willoughby Gap. A lot of the leaves that have changed there so far looked muted with a lot of burnt oranges and yellows, but there are still a lot of green trees that haven’t changed yet and have plenty of potential.

She met one visitor from the Midwest who was enjoying the early season colors.

“Oh, I think they’re great. I mean I think the variation, you know of the greens, rust colors are fabulous,” said Paul Erny of Milwaukee.

Jess continued her journey along Route 5 in Orleans County, where she was a bit surprised by how much green there still is.

As she approached Jay Peak on Route 242 and started climbing in elevation, there was a sudden pop of color with a lot more of the vibrant yellows and reds we know and love. It was the only place she saw Monday that she would call near peak, but it is still early in the season and a lot more places will start looking more like this over the next couple weeks.

You can track the progress of fall foliage on our website with our interactive foliage map. We also need your help filling it out. If you take any fall foliage photos, you can submit them via the link on our fall foliage page!
