Phoenix Browne started helping his community one yard at a time.

Twelve-year-old Cheasapeake resident Phoenix Browne worked all summer long mowing lawns—and he didn't get paid.  

Browne was participating in the "50 Yard Challenge," a mission sponsored by the Raising Men Lawn Care Service (RMLCS) to help young people "experience a great sense of achievement while also developing their social skills and lawn care experience." 

The challenge? It's there in the name—Mow 50 lawns free-of-charge for elderly residents, those with disabilities, single parents, veterans, and anyone who may need help in their area. The 50 Yard Challenge is nationwide and open to anyone—both boys and girls—to participate in year-round. In the fall and winter months, the challenge focuses on raking leaves and shoveling snow.

Browne's father Sheldon became aware of the challenge on Instagram, and the family thought it would be a good thing to pursue. Browne was already mowing neighborhood lawns in Great Bridge and was looking to expand. After contacting RMLCS, and arming himself with a 50 Yard Challenge t-shirt, earplugs, and safety glasses, he began the challenge in July.

Speaking with the Virginia Pilot, Browne said “I didn’t think I’d get it done in time. … But it’s really worth it.” 

He mowed lawns throughout Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach and was done with the challenge in August. What's more, although there was no charge, some clients wanted to tip him. Phoenix used that tip money so he and his family could set up stands around the 757 to provide pizza and water to the homeless or anyone else in need.

Perhaps, obviously, this got the attention of plenty of residents in the area and Tuesday evening, October 13, Browne was presented with a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Community Service by Chesapeake Mayor Rick West and The Chesapeake City Council.

In addition to the award, Browne received a free lawn mower, weed-eater, and leaf blower from RMLCS.  He plans to use those items and continue his good work next summer, mowing lawns for free and using any tip money to feed the homeless.
