The Bears had a massively disappointing 2024 season. Draft night turned out to be the high point of their year when they selected quarterback Caleb Williams and wide receiver Rome Odunze. After a 4-2 start, the wheels came off, leading to the in-season firing of head coach Matt Eberflus and a dismal 5-12 record. Enter Johnson, his offensive prowess and five new starters in the trenches. Positive vibes are back in Chicago, with the focus on continuing to support Williams in Year 2. Lots of starting spots are filled, but there’s room for upgrades — and bedrock, blue-chip players — for the future.Scouting the decision-makers
This will be Poles’ fourth draft, and he has only one player from his first draft — cornerback Kyler Gordon — who’s a surefire extension candidate this year. However, he has also drafted eight current starters and several other core players. This time around, Poles and assistant GM Ian Cunningham will certainly lean on Johnson, whose massive contract can’t be ignored when considering his potential role in personnel decisions.Bears’ key offseason additions
Bears’ key positions of need
Offensive line: The Bears might have their starting five set, pending left tackle Braxton Jones’ recovery, but they can provide competition for him — something Poles mentioned at the combine. We saw the Bears spend big on the position, and there’s still room to fortify the group tasked with protecting Williams, whether that’s a 2025 Week 1 starting left tackle or someone who will take over in ’26.Defensive line: The acquisitions of Odeyingbo and Jarrett helped, but the Bears need to continue boosting their pass rush, both on the interior and the edge. They have five guys they can feel comfortable with, including Montez Sweat, Gervon Dexter and Andrew Billings, but the defensive line — like the offensive line — isn’t done yet, as the Bears can look to the Eagles when it comes to depth up front.Linebacker: The Bears are set with Tremaine Edmunds and T.J. Edwards, but who’s the strongside linebacker? What’s the future at the position, considering it’s the last year of Edwards’ deal and there’s an out in Edmunds’ contract after 2025? Now, it’s possible that Edwards gets an extension and Edmunds thrives in Dennis Allen’s defense, setting them up for the future, but depth is still a concern here. It’s a similar situation at safety, with uncertain futures for Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker.Bears’ draft analysis
