F or some players, there is still a lot to be said in free agency , and the news on Wednesday is the big offer the Chicago Cubs would make to third baseman Alex Bregman , who is looking for a lucrative deal outside of the Houston Astros , who apparently have already thrown in the towel in efforts to retain him.

Without a doubt, this is good news for Bregman . However, not everything is joy among Cubs fans and MLB analysts , who believe that the player is not the right one to perform at the top of his abilities in a stadium like Wrigley Field , both because of the dimensions of the field and its limits, as well as the weather conditions that impose additional difficulties for right-handed hitters like him.

The Cubs' offer to Bregman would be unbeatable

According to information from Cubs Zone on X, Alex Bregman would be tempted by the Cubs with an offer that, as 'The Godfather' said, he could not refuse. "The Cubs have a 'creative, potentially unprecedented' contract offer for Alex Bregman, according to Matthew Trueblood (...) the deal is believed to be worth around $30 million annually over four years, with multiple opt-out options," they said.

It is worth noting that Bregman's agent is Scott Boras , who has not been able, despite his best efforts, to place Pete Alonso in or out of the Mets , which is why the Astros player's process is being closely followed, as well as his well-known strategy of maintaining flexibility at the expense of more lucrative long-term contracts, something he was only able to achieve this season with Juan Soto.

There is another challenge the Cubs will have to overcome, which is related to their finances , as they will have to sign Alex Bregman without exceeding the competitive balance tax (CBT) threshold.

A stadium that would represent a major challenge for Bregman

According to ESPN's Jesse Rogers , Wrigley Field is a real challenge for hitters like Bregman, as the ballpark's dimensions, wind patterns and pitcher-friendly conditions will be a problem: "He should avoid the Cubs at all costs ," he said.

The reason is simpler than it seems: Bregman will have to overcome the high limits of Wrigley's outfield , not to mention the winds that favor pitchers and make things difficult for right-handed hitters, and as proof of the statistics, a large number of sluggers of his profile have seen their numbers collapse in this ballpark.
