An Illinois man was arrested Monday morning on multiple charges following an investigation that covered three counties along Interstate 65 in southern Indiana.

Mekyell Brown-Champion, 25, of Chicago faces preliminary charges of robbery, a Level 5 felony, criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor, and battery, a Class B misdemeanor, in Scott County and also faces possible additional in charges in Jackson and Bartholomew counties, according to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police.

The incident that led to Brown-Champion’s arrest started shortly before 8 a.m. Monday when Scottsburg Police Department received a report of a possible robbery at a gas station in Scott County along the interstate, said Wheeles.

Information was quickly sent out to surrounding law enforcement agencies to observe for the black Volkswagen SUV with Tennessee registration and the male suspect, police reported.

At approximately 8:10 a.m., officers with Seymour Police Department observed the vehicle being driven northbound on I-65 near the 50 mile marker in Jackson County, Wheeles said.

Police tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver, later determined to be Brown-Champion fled in the vehicle northbound at a high rate of speed.

Troopers with the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post and officers from multiple other agencies soon assisted with the pursuit of the vehicle.

Brown-Champion continued northbound into Bartholomew County where he exited I-65 on to State Road 46 at Columbus. He traveled westbound on State Road 46 before ultimately turning around and attempting to get back onto I-65 southbound.

While traveling on the on-ramp, Trooper Randel Miller conducted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) Maneuver, which caused the vehicle to spin around and become disabled, safely ending the pursuit.

Brown-Champion, who was soon taken into custody, was wanted on a warrant out of Illinois. The vehicle recently had been reported stolen out of Nashville, Tennessee.

Investigators with Scottsburg Police Department arrested Brown-Champion and transported to the Scott County Jail where he was incarcerated.
