City workers spent part of Thursday trying to get the falls in Wichita Falls working again.

The artificial falls just off Central Freeway at Riverside Cemetery draws water up from the Wichita River below.

City spokesperson Chris Horgen said the falls have been turned off because the river is low and a lot of debris and silt has clogged the intake for the falls.

On Thursday workers from the public works and parks departments tried to clear away the muck so the city’s namesake can flow again.

Horgen said a short portion of the Circle Trail by the falls was closed so the work could be done.

The artificial falls was built in 1986 at a location where motorists could see it from the busy highway.

The original falls were located father east on the river and were not nearly as tall as the artificial feature.

They were washed away by a flood in 1886.
