TYNDALL, S.D. – After falling in the SoDak 16 last season as the No. 1 overall seed, the Bon Homme High School softball team is back and eyeing a trip to state yet again. As the No. 2 seed this year, the Cavaliers will look to defeat 15th-seeded Viborg-Hurley and punch their ticket to the Class B state tournament. And the Cavaliers enter the postseason on a torrid hot streak. With an 11-3 record, Bon Homme has been one of the most dominant teams in Class B, especially over the last month of the season. Since beginning the season 1-3, the Cavaliers have won 10 straight games. They’ve outscored their opponents by a staggering 115-26 margin and have averaged 11.5 runs per game. On the season, Bon Homme has averaged 11.9 runs per game and has only allowed 4.8 runs to opponents. If the rough first four games to start the season are taken away from that total, opponents are only scoring 2.6 runs per game. On the other side, 15th-seeded Viborg-Hurley has a 7-10 record on the year and is also on a winning streak heading into the postseason. The Cougars have won four straight and have displayed an ability to defeat higher-seeded teams, highlighted by a 5-4 victory over eighth-seeded Hanson on May 22. They’ve been good offensively, averaging 8.6 runs per game, but have been inconsistent keeping other teams off the board as opponents have averaged 9.4 runs per game. The two will face off at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, in Tyndall for a spot in the Class B state tournament, which begins on Thursday, June 5, in Aberdeen.
Hanson hosts Mobridge-Pollock
As the only other area team to host a SoDak 16 game, eighth-seeded Hanson welcomes ninth-seeded Mobridge-Pollock to Alexandria on Tuesday. The Beavers enter the postseason with a 16-6 record and are winners of eight of their last 10 games. Offensively, they’ve average over 11 runs per game while holding opponents to 4.9 runs per game, scoring 10 or more runs in 12 games this year. Olivia Kayser has been a major two-way player for the Beavers, but especially on the mound, where she’s pitched almost every inning this season. On the other side, the Tigers are also trending upwards as of late, having won six of their last seven games. Mobridge-Pollock (10-6) has especially relied on its defense, which has only allowed about five runs per game. Offensively, they’ve been able to bring runs across the plate with 10.5 runs per game. The two will meet at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Alexandria. Avon heads east to face Chester
After missing out on a hosting opportunity, Avon will head east as the No. 10 seed to play No. 7 Chester. Following a strong start to the year, winning nine out of their first 12 games, the Pirates enter the postseason losing six of their last eight and looking to turn a corner. Avon (14-10) mostly relied on a defense and pitching staff that’s only allowed 6.7 runs per game, but the offense has only mustered 7.7 runs per game. Meanwhile, the Flyers won nine out of their first 10 games, but have leveled out since then. Despite that, Chester (12-5) owns one of the best runs per game averages in Class B with 11.8 while holding opponents to only 5.2 runs per game. The two meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Chester. MCM looks to upset Florence/Henry
No. 12 McCook Central/Montrose heads into the SoDak 16 with an upset in mind when the Fighting Cougars meet fifth-seeded Florence/Henry. MCM (13-9) enters the SoDak 16 with some confidence after winning six out of their last seven games, going 2-1 at the Big East Conference tournament to end the regular season. MCM has averaged 9.5 runs per game this season while holding opponents to 7.1 runs per game. However, Florence/Henry (15-3) hasn’t lost since May 1 and has rode strong pitching to the No. 5-seed. They’ve held opponents to only 2.9 runs per game, which is the second-best mark in Class B behind top-seeded Deuel. Offensively, 9.4 runs per game has been good enough to get the job done. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Florence. Scotland/Menno eyeing victory at Alcester-Hudson
Entering the postseason as the No. 13-seed, Scotland/Menno heads east to take on No. 4 Alcester-Hudson, as the Trappers look to return to the state tournament. This will be the second-straight meeting between the two sides as the Cubs defeated the Trappers 14-4 on May 23. Despite losing their final two matchups of the season, Scotland/Menno (8-7) has shown an ability to compete with the Class B elite, defeating Hanson earlier in the year and narrowly losing to both Bon Homme and Castlewood. Scotland/Menno averaged 7.9 runs per game, however, opponents have done the exact same thing with 7.9 runs per game as well. Meanwhile, the 15-3 Cubs have yet to lose to another Class B team this season, with all three losses coming against Class A foes. Their 11.6 runs per game and 3.3 runs allowed per game are both top-five marks in the Class. Tuesday’s first pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. in Alcester. FMFA faces tough challenge in top-seeded Deuel
No. 16 Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy narrowly made the SoDak 16. To make the state tournament, it will have to take down top-seeded Deuel. FMFA (6-13) enters the postseason in a rut, currently on a four-game losing streak. The Phoenix averaged 7.1 runs per game, which ranks seventh-fewest in Class B, while allowing opponents to score 10.6 runs per game. On the other side, Deuel (18-2) is a powerhouse with Castlewood being the lone Class B team to down the Cardinals this season. Complimenting an offense that produces an average of 10 runs per game, Deuel's stout pitching stands out, allowing an average of 1.9 runs per game. It's the top mark in the class by a full run over the next closest side, Florence/Henry. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Clear Lake.
