CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio (WOIO)— Height High School opened early Monday morning to ensure students have enough time to get through metal detectors before classes begin. These new security measures come after several loaded guns were found on students in the first six weeks of school . One parent expressed relief Monday morning. “I like what they’re doing now. It’s a little worry some but they’re trying everything they can to protect the kids and still have school,” parent Ashley Scott told 19 News. The upgraded safety measures were specifically put in place after two students were found in possession of loaded guns inside the school last week. Both of the students were immediately arrested and will face criminal charges. The school district canceled classes at Heights High School on Friday and promised to have “supports in place” when classes resume on Monday. An email sent out Saturday laid out the new Heights High School security procedures for parents and teacher. The procedures include opening the high school building to students by 7:15 a.m. to allow plenty of time for students to go through the mandatory screening by the metal detectors before classes begin at 8:15 a.m. The recent incidents involving students in possession of firearms and an attempted robbery of a student at gunpoint have shocked our school community. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain the top priority of the Cleveland Heights Teachers Union. For several years, our Union has advocated for the implementation of metal detectors and enhanced security measures in our schools. We need to be free from disruptions and dangers that threaten our students. In addition to security measures in our schools, we need policymakers to get serious about reducing the prevalence of guns in our communities.
