Clifton Elementary Principal Amy Shepherd has been charged with theft after police said she stole shelves from the school in March and April.

Another Clifton Elementary employee, Rebecca Fowler, is a co-defendant in the case.

Both Shepherd and Fowler were placed on administrative leave in April, according to Mesa County Valley School District 51.

According to a complaint filed June 5, Shepherd is accused of taking shelves from Clifton Elementary between March 29 and April 23.

Shepherd and Fowler have both been charged with theft of property valuing more than $2,000 but less than $5,000, a class six felony. Fowler has also been charged with complicity.

Shepherd has been principal of Clifton Elementary since 2021. Before that, she was an assistant principal at Mesa View Elementary and Lincoln Orchard Mesa Elementary. Fowler is a secretary at the school.

Both Shepherd and Fowler were released on personal recognizance bonds. Shepherd is next due in court June 25 for a review hearing. Fowler is due next in court July 9 for a review hearing.
