MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Church of God in Christ (COGIC) is moving out of Memphis, according to Memphis Mayor Paul Young. COGIC's annual Holy Convocation will be in Memphis in 2025 but will be held in St. Louis in 2026 through 2028, according to Mayor Young. "We all appreciate the deep history and significance of the Church of God in Christ to our city. While we are saddened by their decision to move the conference to St. Louis, we respect their choice and will continue to honor the legacy they have built here," Mayor Young told FOX13. In April 2024, COGIC voted to stay in Memphis for their 2025 conference, but frustrations between the Saints and Memphis were already brewing. Even then, COGIC leaders and Mayor Young were having conversations regarding hotel concerns. Bishop Brandon Porter, a member of COGIC’s General Board, told FOX13 on Monday that the city needs to make better accommodations for guests, offer better-adjusted hotel rates, and needs to be "more conference friendly." RELATED: Will Memphis continue to be site of COGIC's annual convocation? “The peak season for Memphis is April through July, not November. That's when we were not here. It was not peak. So rooms go from 139 to 199 or 299 or 399 in some cases. And we must be more considerate of our people that are traveling and coming here as they do each year,” Porter told FOX13 in October 2024. Porter said that COGIC may "rotate" other conferences into Memphis while the Holy Convocation is held in St. Louis. The annual COGIC convocation typically brought more than 30,000 people a year to Memphis, COGIC's headquarters. Those attendees usually bring about $35 million to the Memphis economy.
