In an in-house study conducted by Care.com, Colorado ranked 3rd in the nation with the healthiest pets. That’s no shock, considering Colorado is one of the healthiest states in America.

Colorado is not only one of the pet-friendliest states, but it is also has some of the healthiest pets. It doesn’t come as surprise since Colorado has been continuously ranked the least-obese state for years on end. It seems our healthy lifestyles and habits have extended to our dogs, cats, and other pets! Care.com looked at pet-care data in each state and ranked them across four categories: Illness, Access to Vet Care, Healthy Environment, and Total Pet Spend. Colorado ranked as second-lowest incidence of pet illness and second-high on total pet spending. In the Healthy Environment ranking, Colorado didn’t fare very well, however. All of this is due to the number of sheltered animals, percentage of protected land, air quality, and various other metrics.

“Pets in Western states enjoy a longer and healthier life than those in Eastern or Southern states where warmer climates contribute to the spread of infectious diseases like heartworm disease, Lyme disease and hookworms.” -Joyce Hodel, Care.com’s lead data analyst
