The Colorado Rockies Have the Tough Task of Catching Up in Top-Heavy Division as their Spring Training Continues in Arizona

With spring training underway for the Colorado Rockies, the team is feeling the pressure of the upcoming 2017 season. The Rockies have been given the tough task of charting out a course through the top-heavy National League West division, which has been dominated by the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants over the last nine years. The teams have a combined eight division titles. In the Rockies 24-year history, they have yet to win the West division title. Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich is embracing that challenge. “I think we’re right there in a good division… And facing good competition should make us stronger. That’s part of becoming a good team.” After six straight years of losing seasons, the vibes felt in Scottsdale during spring training have the Rockies off to a promising start! https://www.instagram.com/p/BQwPXxqhV5L/?taken-by=rockies https://www.instagram.com/p/BQyNgz2BdLL/?taken-by=rockies There are some challenges they’ll have to face if they want to have a successful and winning season… With the financial stakes rising in the West, piecing together rosters will be crucial for the Rockies. Last season, both the Dodgers and the Giants payrolls had been more than twice as high as the Rockies, sitting at $250 million and $172 million respectively. The Rockies payroll was at $112 million by the end of the season.

It doesn’t make the Rockies’ job any easier now that the Giants have signed one of the best closers in the game, Mark Melancon, to a four-year contract at $62 million. While the Dodgers recently re-signed third baseman Justin Turner and closer Kenley Jansen to multiyear contracts at a combined $144 million.

“We don’t dwell on the fact that the Dodgers or Giants have a higher payroll. We’re showing our intent to grow.” -Jeff Bridich, Rockies general manager

There is hope on the horizon for the Rockies, however. Back in December, they signed converted first baseman Ian Desmond for a five-year deal at $70 million; he spent the 2010 to 2015 seasons with the Washington Nationals as a shortstop. His time spent during spring training with the Rockies will be devoted to mastering the first base position. The Rockies are hoping to fill their rosters with young talent, including Desmond, pitchers Greg Holland and Mike Dunn, and second baseman Alexi Amarista. With the addition of the young talent and the pricey bullpen, do you think the Rockies will be the team to watch this 2017 season? Tell us in the comments below!
