Colorado Springs police are investigating two crashes involving stolen vehicles early Tuesday morning.
Colorado Springs police are investigating two crashes that occurred early in the morning of Feb. 21. Both crashes involved recently stolen vehicles, and one involved the culprit firing on the vehicle’s owner.One of the drivers had been trying to bait police into a high-speed chase for several days in the stolen pickup truck. The chase eventually occurred Tuesday morning, which ended with the driver flipping the vehicle into a resident’s yard. A homeowner told police that the driver crawled out of the truck and ran away.According to neighbors, the crash happened around 2 a.m. The driver has not been found, but a passenger who got out of the vehicle at a 7-Eleven has been questioned. The person is under 18, and the driver may be as well. Police believe the truck was stolen within the last week, and it’s suspected that the driver was warming up the vehicle when it was stolen, since the keys were inside.Another stolen vehicle was involved in a crash early Tuesday on Del Rey Drive. The vehicle’s owner said he chased the culprit who stole his truck around 5:30 a.m., but stopped when the thief took the man’s handgun from the glove compartment and fired at him.About 25 minutes later, Colorado Springs police were informed that several vehicles and a trailer were hit by the stolen truck. It was later recovered abandoned near the hit vehicles. The culprit took the handgun with them, and has yet to be identified or found.
