COLUMBIA — The Columbia Regional Airport is set to pave one of its gravel parking lots in a $1.5 million project the Columbia City Council unanimously approved this week. The project marks the most recent upgrade to the airport, which has seen other recent renovations including a market in the terminal . According to city documents, Columbia will get $1.3 million in reimbursement from the Federal Aviation Administration for the repairs, with the city bearing the remaining $267,000. “This new and improved parking lot will offer about 181 parking spaces, along with upgraded signage, lighting, and pavement markings,” said Mike Parks, manager of Columbia Regional Airport. “It is located on the west side of Airport Drive from the main terminal, making it easy and convenient for travelers.” The new lot will remain free and open to the public. The construction of two new entrance roads to the lot across the street from the terminal is set to improve access, as well. Additional enhancements include improved grading, sidewalks, crosswalks and protective bollards for pedestrian safety. The city is currently accepting bids for the project, with construction expected to begin in late summer after grant acceptance. The project is expected to be complete by the fall.
