Heads up, Columbia residents and commuters: a series of accessibility improvements are about to make their debut across your cityscape.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has its sights set on pedestrian-friendly upgrades along several key routes starting this week.

Details have been outlined in a recent MoDOT announcement , signaling a commitment to embracing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

Construction is poised to kick off on Boone County Route WW, stretching from Bricktown Road to S. Rolling Hills Road, come Thursday, June 19—granted the weather decides to play nice.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg. A cascade of improvements is tentatively scheduled for an array of Columbia locales.

Expect to see transformations on Route TT from Park de Ville Drive to Missouri Route 740, Missouri Route 163 from E. Broadway to Rogers Street, Route E at Primrose Drive, Missouri Route 763 at Route VV, and Route B at Vandiver.

These sites are primed to benefit from new sidewalks, curb ramps, and overhauled pavement approaches designed to bring them right up to snuff with ADA regulations.

However, progress comes at a price of convenience. Pedestrian pathways will see temporary closures, and those driving should be ready for sporadic single-lane shutdowns. Flaggers will be on-site to maintain the flow. And while we're discussing things vehicular, MoDOT has a plea: "work with us by buckling up, putting your phone down, obeying all traffic signs, and slowing down and moving over in work zones." Safety first, after all. The overall project aims to be wrapped up neatly by the time December 1, rolls around.
