When Columbia trailed McDonald, 4-2, in a Division VI Region 21 semifinal, the Raiders knew how to flip the switch.

With their season on the line, the Raiders scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on May 28. Needing three outs to win, Columbia kept the Blue Devils scoreless for a 6-4 playoff victory.

Columbia (18-7) advanced to the Division VI, Region 21 final, scheduled for 5 p.m., May 30 at Akron Firestone Stadium in Akron.

With its one hit coming from Bree Heidecker, Columbia grinded out its at-bats to produce offense.

The Raiders were walked six times, five resulting in the runner reaching home plate.

Heidecker, Columbia’s all-time RBI leader and recently named Lorain County Player of the Year (for Divisions V, VI and VII) hit a double to send Grace Anderson home. Kenzie Shackelton scored on a wild pitch in the same at-bat.

Alina Jones relieved Columbia starting pitcher Sadie Schulke (three innings pitched, three earned runs, five walks, three strikeouts) inside the circle.

The sophomore pitcher threw four innings, struck out eight batters and conceded four hits, four walks and one earned run.

McDonald finished its season 15-6.
