JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Ribault boys basketball team has its sights set on a Class 4A state title, but first, the Trojans must make it past Stranahan (Fort Lauderdale) in a state semifinal on Tuesday in Lakeland. Historically, Ribault has won four state championships, and they’re hoping to add another title to their legacy. Head Coach Charles Showers, who is in his sixth season leading the Trojans, played for Ribault himself and graduated in 1981. “I think this is the best defensive team I have had the last couple of years. If we are going to get there, it’s going to be because of the defense,” Showers said. “A great bunch of kids who want to play hard and just want to be the champions. So that’s some of the characteristics that make us go.” The Trojans, who will play at 3 p.m. Tuesday, were among six area boys basketball teams to punch their tickets for the RP Funding Center in Lakeland for the high school hoops state semifinals. If they win Tuesday, the Trojans would advance to the state title game at 7 p.m. Thursday against the winner of the Eustis-Gibbs state semifinal. The community is invited to send off the team at noon Monday at Ribault Middle School.
