Costco leads the way in best social distancing practices.

While many states are starting to loosen stay-at-home orders, many companies are continuing to tighten up their social distancing practices. Starting Monday, May 4, Costco warehouses across the nation will require that all members wear a face mask upon entering the warehouse and continue to wear it “at all times.” Additionally, Costco has emphasized that wearing a mask will not serve as a “substitute for social distancing.”

The wholesale retailer has noted that there will be an exception made for certain members. For example, those unable to wear a face mask due to medical reasons may be exempt. Additionally, children under 2 years of age will not be required to wear a face mask.

Costco

At the start of the pandemic, Costco was the leading force in demonstrating what proper social distancing should look like. The company has demonstrated its commitment to the community by placing strict company guidelines to ensure that they are doing their best to fight the virus.

In late March, Costcos across the nation shortened their hours to provide additional time for associates to clean and sanitize the store. And to help protect members of the community who are at a higher risk of complications due to the virus, they began opening their doors between 9 and 10 a.m., specifically for members age 60 and older.

In addition, only a set number of members are allowed in the store at once, and shoppers are limited as to the number of certain products they're allowed to purchase.

As the virus raged through the nation in April, Costco was one of many stores that began requiring all employees to wear a face mask during their shifts.

Do Your Part

While Costco has been leading the way in safe practices, the first line of defense starts with you. Remember to only shop when necessary, use your personal protective equipment correctly, and stay home as often as possible.

As businesses begin to reopen, it is imperative to remember that the best way to avoid contracting the virus is by practicing proper social distancing and steering clear of those who might be the most vulnerable.

With Costco's new mask requirement for members, this interruption in the daily norm is just another reminder of how our society has drastically changed in under a couple of months’ time.
